However Demon Fox Kurama has complete control over Demon Realm Plants and has more power than regular Kurama. Kurama has complete control over any Human Realm plant and has some control over Demon Realm plants. Kurama's special ability is that he can turn plants into deadly weapons by manipulating his youki into that plant. Thus, he decides to continue living his human life as Shiori's son. However, sometime during or before the tenth year, an act of selflessness by his mother, Minamino Shiori, opened Kurama's eyes to pain he had caused his mother while growing up. Kurama planned to leave Ningenkai to return to Makai after regaining his strength after an estimated ten years. It was from this point that Kurama made the transfer to a human body with the intention to recover his strength as the child developed. ![]() He was considered to be an A-class demon (though he eventually surpasses that), and is said to be more than a thousand years old.Īfter being wounded by a bounty hunter while in his spirit fox form, Kurama sent his spirit into the Ningenkai (human world) where his spirit took refuge within an unborn child that had not yet gained a soul. ![]() Youko Kurama was a cold hearted and ruthless thief and the most feared bandit in Makai. In many instances, Kurama has shown to be very self-sacrificing in the interests of the safety of his friends and family. He is protective of those he cares about and is often merciless to anyone that poses them a threat, a shift in his usually friendly manner. His analytical nature is present in battle where he prefers to study the strengths and weaknesses of his opponents before devising a strategy of his own. Kurama is generally regarded as the most calm and level-headed member of the group. He is one of the wiser characters in the series and the smartest and calmest of the four main characters. His ability is in manipulating plants, and he generally wields a whip created from a rose vine, complete with thorns. However, this does not appeared to be cited to any specific source, so it is also highly plausible that there is no direct connection between the use of the name Kurama and the fox.Kurama (蔵馬)Kurama is first encountered in the series at the same time as Hiei. Foremost among these is the ability to assume human form. Stories depict as intelligent beings and as possessing magical abilities that increase with their age and wisdom. Kurama in Yū Yū was a yōko, it makes sense to reuse that name for a kitsune.Īs for the original usage of the name Kurama in Yū Yū, one plausible explanation is that because of the name Kurama's connotation to the martial arts master Sōjōbō mentioned above, who possessed great wisdom and taught magic to Minamoto no Yoshitsune. How it appears is that Yū Yū Hakusho chose this name in the early 1990s (probably from the name of the aforementioned mountain), then Naruto used this as inspiration for a similar character of their own.īecause of this choice from Naruto's mangaka, it seems likely that he also chose a similar character to use that name for. ![]() This does appear to be cited, but the citation is to a book called the Second Artbook ( this one, I think, pages 74-81), which I haven't been able to find online anywhere. The other one listed there, of course, is Kurama from Yū Yū Hakusho. The name may also reference Mount Kurama (鞍馬山), the sacred mountain said to be the home of the Tengu Sōjōbō who taught people ninjutsu and other Japanese martial arts. Kishimoto was mainly inspired to create Kurama based on the character with the same name from the manga series Yū Yū Hakusho. "Kurama" (九喇嘛) literally means 'nine lama'. The Naruto Wiki mentions this as a possible source of the name: The demons of Kurama and Atago are among the most famous tengu. ![]() The philosopher Hayashi Razan lists one of the three greatest of the daitengu as Sōjōbō of Mount Kurama. There is a mountain, called Mount Kurama, which has a fair bit of spiritual significance (mostly due to Kurama Temple).
